Unprecedented Religious Event: Sea and Land Patrols
The 2024 Lanyang Mazu Cultural Festival concluded grandly with the support of all the faithful. The patrolling procession spanned across ten towns in Yilan, covering both sea and land routes totaling 209.35 kilometers. Over 108,000 believers participated, making it a significant religious and cultural event. Whether it was the sea patrol from Nanfang’ao to Wushi Harbor in Toucheng, or the land route from northern to southern regions, Mazu’s blessings were witnessed in every town, and the faithful’s sincere wishes were conveyed throughout the journey.
A Pilgrimage in the Rain: Faith Shines Through the Storm
Despite the torrential rain on the third day of the event, the faith of the believers remained undiminished. Umbrellas in hand or walking in the rain, followers stayed close to the Mazu palanquin, praying for blessings for their families and themselves along the way. Streets in Luodong, Dongshan, and Su’ao were filled with people welcoming Mazu, praying devoutly, passing under the palanquin, and receiving peace talismans, creating scenes of faith and devotion. Every corner of Lanyang felt Mazu’s blessings amidst the rain, and the strength of belief grew even stronger in the storm.

The Lanyang Mazu Cultural Festival closely intertwines with the local customs of Yilan, showcasing a unique religious charm. From the magnificent sea patrol to the lively land pilgrimage, Lanyang’s religious culture is rich and distinctive. Devotees worshiping Mazu travel along the route, sharing snacks and warmth at refreshment stations, feeling the piety of Yilan’s people and their warm hospitality for visitors, making it an unforgettable Lanyang experience.

This year’s event featured an interactive “Stamp Collection” activity, where devotees could collect stamps along the way to exchange for a limited-edition commemorative “Mazu Ci Bei” (Blessing Cup), attracting thousands of participants and highlighting Lanyang’s religious culture. Moreover, the sea pilgrimage allowed followers to board boats and experience the blessings of maritime faith firsthand, creating a grand and spectacular scene. Every part of the event captivated participants, sparking deep interest in Mazu worship.

On the 18th, Magistrate Lin Zimiao led guests and top officials to offer incense to Mazu and other deities stationed at the county government, jointly praying for good weather and peace. The highly anticipated peace talisman, unveiled by Magistrate Lin, Nantian Temple Chairman Lin Qishan, and other guests, features a bright red auspicious design. The front displays a smiling, cute cartoon version of Mazu, wearing a phoenix crown and the yellow “Empress of Heaven” dragon robe. The back bears the inscription “Sea and Land Patrols Bless Lanyang,” along with an image symbolizing the protection of the sea goddess, highlighting Mazu’s guardianship over maritime peace and blessings for all lives.
